Our story begins long, long ago, with a girl in love who lived on a farm.
But that story is dark, and few remember it. So instead our story begins yesterday, when four travelers woke eight years from their home, a place occupied and lost to the demon race Xu.
Viktor, the Chosen One who spent his life in a bunker, with a stout Russian liver and no need for articles. Bridger, a rich kid leader who is both better and worse than he thought at it. Sunny, invisible to mirrors and machines but changing them nonetheless. And finally Rue, an unsettling woman with cold eyes and a decided taste for life.
They wake orbiting Cori, a super structure modeled after the Dyson sphere, with varying orbital rings and thousands of civilations. Cori is defended by the Mecha, machines of unknown origins formerly controlled by the Xu. Their engineers died in an… incident… and they now reportedly fire on sight during night cycles.
Our heroes’ ship, the Stellar Lady, initially docked at port A3027, where they were met by a Jane Sized Cockroach, Kleenorp. He is of the Kleenorp species. He led them to his home, where he provided them with food of blocks, tasting of curried beef and sour melon with chocolate, and he provided them with alcohol of his people, and customs lessons, and an alibi.
They are all from Wyrd, you see. Land of dragon masters and riches. To be from Earth would be too… complicated.
And so the heroes returned to their ship to inform the rest of their human crew that they all escaped Wyrd, only to find their ship gone. With some assistance from a… Black Sphere Thing, whose gratitude customs are encompassing, they followed the Stellar Lady to Pallisades, a dock on the next ring over to the north (?) where Lalip University resides.
Our crew hopes to discover researches for the secret stash of Xu blood they found, and also to chase down Tanda, a fire breathing Shakarat with a vendetta against Viktor and a face punch debt with Rue.
Tanda may have also killed some shipmates. And stole some secret Xu blood. And burned down a book.
It seems quite likely she is itching for a fight, and she’s not the only one.
